Recipe for a Conversation

A sprinkle of small talk,
an anecdote or two.
Add in a gesture
to give them a clue

Speak your emotions
through the motion of hands,
guided by words
so the group understands.

Then listen quite closely
add an affirmative sound
eye contact isn’t essential
just don’t stare at the ground.

Add a moment of silence
there’s no reason to break it,
get a thought on the tray
for ten minutes we’ll bake it

I’m a day late to the party but I wanted to get involved in NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month). This one shares inspiration with another one of my poems: Recipe for a Poem

  1. Sometimes conversations stall because both parties are not sure where they stand. But a conversation may have a moment of silence but it can move forward if you let it.
